Artist Statement
My artistic practice is anchored in both drawing and sculpture, unified by the versatile qualities of paper that seamlessly bridge these mediums. My work intricately weaves illustrated subjects with sculptural elements, making paper essential to my entire body of work. Paper's unique "memory" allows creases to preserve the history of their folds. In my practice, folding is used to maintain precise alignment, serving as a registration mark for accurately positioning consecutive shapes. Paper is a highly sustainable and recyclable material, capable of being renewed and repurposed, as if reincarnated. Essentially, paper can live again and again. During high production periods, this versatility allows me to work on smaller components without being confined to the studio. I often carry a stack of paper and a pair of scissors to cut paper during commutes, lunch breaks, or whenever the opportunity arises. Additionally, I scrutinize the formal economy of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper to extract the most efficient amount of shapes and minimize waste. Any odd scraps that remain are trimmed and used for drawing, creating a closed-loop system of material use. Lastly, paper is cost-effective and easy to find. A ream of paper costs under $10 and is available almost anywhere, including convenience stores.
